Women's Soccer Named PacWest Team of the Week

Two Island Teams are 2-0, While Sea Lions Win Big Battle vs. Sunbirds

IRVINE, California – It was a wild week in PacWest women's soccer action, with UH Hilo and Chaminade sweeping all visitors to the islands and Point Loma topping Fresno Pacific in a big early-season showdown. The Vulcans scored 10 goals to win Team of the Week, Gracie Bowers (Chaminade) scored three times to gain Player of the Week and PLNU goalkeeper Julia Pinnell didn't give up a goal to claim Defender of the Week

HILO GOES GOAL CRAZY DURING PAIR OF HOME WINS

The PacWest Team of the Week is the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans. The No. 7 ranked Vulcans took out Dominican 3-1 and followed that up with a 7-0 whitewash of Academy of Art, the highest number of goals scored by a PacWest team this season.

Three different goal scorers found the back of the net against the Penguins with Daelenn Tokunaga providing assists on two of the scores. Filipaa Graneld had a goal and a assist in the same contest.

Against the Urban Knights, SEVEN different players scored, including Nanea Wall who also had two assists in the high-scoring affair.

The Vulcans have now outscored their opponents 23-3 this year while improving to 7-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES

Holy Names had just one match last week, rolling to a 4-0 non-conference win over Cal Maritime. The Hawks improved to 6-3 overall…Ruby Burroughs had a goal and an assist in Chaminade's 3-0 win over the Urban Knights…Prior to the loss to Point Loma, Fresno Pacific posted a 2-0 win over Biola. Tessa Simmons had a goal and a assist for the Sunbirds and goalkeeper Monique Neverez had the shutout with five saves…Dominican and Hawai'i Pacific played to a 1-1 tie…Azusa Pacific and Concordia also played to a tie, a 0-0 final. CUI's Riley Urquiza had six saves for the Golden Eagles and APU's Maddie Williams had three stops…Alana Diaz had TWO goals in the win over the Sunbirds. She now is tied for the PacWest lead with six goals, sharing that mark with FPU's Tori De Leon, who also scored in the same match…Hilo's Nanea Wall had a goal and three assists last week, all while coming off the bench for the Vulcans.

LOOKING AHEAD

Concordia (5-2-2) plays at Holy Names (6-3) on Thursday…Hawai'i Hilo (7-0-1) plays island rival Chaminade (5-3) on Friday on Oahu in a battle of 2-0 teams in the conference…Point Loma (6-1-2) plays at Holy Names on Saturday…Concordia is at Fresno Pacific (5-3-2) as well on Saturday…League play wraps up on Sunday with Hawai'i Hilo playing at Hawai'i Pacific (2-3-3). The Sharks are 1-0-1 in PacWest play….Seven of the PacWest's 11 teams have winning records heading into October…UH Hilo was ranked No. 7 in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll with Point Loma checking in at No. 18. Concordia was among "others receiving votes".
