HILO, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo women's basketball team closed November-play of the Big Island Holiday Classic with a 72-44 loss to the University of Mary Friday evening at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The Vulcans shot just 27.7 percent from the field (18 of 65) while making just three 3-pointers and going 5 of 10 at the free throw line.
UMary seemingly capitalized on its height advantage with a 30-20 points-in-the-paint edge and out-rebounding Hawai'i Hilo, 41-31, with an astounding 34-18 mark on defensive boards.
After a tied-ball game a quarter of the way through the first period, UMary extended itself with a 7-0 run and never looked back as it maintained a double-digit lead through for its first win of the season.
By The Numbers
- Mandi Kawaha led the Vulcans with 15 points.
- Bree Olson and Kamalu Kamakawiwoole nabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively.
- Megan Zander (17), Ryleigh Wacha (11), Addison Rozell (10) and Reese Wishart (15) totaled double-digit scoring figures for the Marauders.
- The Marauders made 14 more trips to the charity stripe, shooting 66.7 percent (16 of 24), while the Vulcans went 5 of 10 (50 percent).
What's Next
Hawai'i Hilo fell to 3-2 overall while UMary improved to 1-2.
The Vulcans will start Pacific West Conference play with a trip to O'ahu next week to take on HPU (Dec. 1) and Chaminade (Dec. 3).
Marauders will begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Dec. 1 against Northern State University.
