Women's Basketball Slips Up to Fairmont State to Close Non-Conference Slate

Hawai‘i Hilo led for most of the game but ultimately fell to the Fighting Falcons, 71-67.

HILO, Hawai'i – The Big Island Holiday Classic returned for the second round of its two-part slate as Hawai'i Hilo hosted Fairmont State in a narrow down-to-the-wire finish with the Fighting Falcons escaping with the win, 71-67, Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans maintained a double-digit lead through most of the first three quarters, holding on until 3:15 left in the third period before proceeding to shoot just 2 of 10 from the field while committing six turnovers. Fairmont State would eventually move ahead on a pair of Katy Darnell free throws to take a one-point lead at the 4:01 mark of the fourth quarter.

With under two minutes to go, Hawai'i Hilo tied the game back up at 67 after a Mandi Kawaha 3-pointer, but the Fighting Falcons' Jalen Gibbs would draw a foul inside the paint on the ensuing possession to re-take the lead on a free throw.

The Vulcans got three finals chances at tying or taking the lead but couldn't quite get the ball in the basket as Fairmont State hit its shots at the charity stripe to slip away with the 71-67 victory.
