INDIANAPOLIS--It was a little bit like deja vu all over again for the University of Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team during their 4-1 loss to the University of North Georgia on Sunday morning.

It was the Vulcans' third straight 4-1 loss at the ITA Indoor National Tennis Championships and second straight match that could have gone either way. Nonetheless when all was said and done, the No. 11 ranked Nighthawks were the winners (3-3) and the No. 15 Vulcans (1-6) came up just short.

Martin Soukal provided UHH's lone point, winning his singles match on court one in straight sets over Joaquin Benoit, 6-3, 6-3. Soukal and Alessio Demichelis also triumphed at No. 1 doubles (6-3) over Benoit and Zach Waldow, but the Vulcans lost the overall doubles point with losses on courts two and three. Soukal, now 5-1 in singles in 2022, also won his match on Saturday against Delta State.

Two of UHH's three singles losses went three sets, with Demichelis falling in a long battle with Ryan Gaskin, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2, ditto for Joshua Liu on court six against Sebastian Murillo, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Two other matches were also in the third set when the match was clinched. Agustin Gentile had won a second set tiebreaker, and Luca Matheiowetz had also battled back after losing the first set, winning the second and playing on into the third.

The Vulcans now return to Hilo and won't play again until March 14 when they begin a four-match road trip in southern California at Azusa Pacific.
