WAIPAHU, O`ahu--Host Hawai`i Pacific shut off all scoring opportunities for visiting Hawai`i Hilo and broke a scoreless tie with runs in four consecutive innings to pull away for an 8-0 win on Friday afternoon at Hans L`Orange Park.
The victory was the second in the five-game series over the Vulcans, both of them Pacific West Conference counters. The two squads will now play one more game tonight and a doubleheader tomorrow, but all three contests will go down as non-conference clashes
UH Hilo is now 9-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference action, while HPU improves to 8-3 on the year and to 2-0 in the PacWest.
The Vulcans had seven hits on the afternoon, but couldn't get any of those base runners home. They had all seven hits through the first six innings of play, but stranded a total of eight Vulcans on the base paths during that time.
UHH lefty
Kyle Alcorn and HPU's Blake Harrison put zeros on the board through the first three and a half innings before the Sharks scratched across a run in the fourth. The Vulcans left the bases loaded in the fifth and then Tejean Smith hit a solo home run in the fifth to make it 2-0. HPU added an unearned run in the sixth (3-0), but then really busted things open in the seventh with a five-spot. Four walks, a hit batter, a passed ball, a double and a bunt single sealed the game for the hosts.Â
Alcorn took the loss despite only allowing five hits in six innings of work. He allowed two earned runs and fanned two. Vulcan second baseman
Vance Oshiro, making his first start of the season, had two of UHH's seven hits.Â
Nicholas Jio had three hits and three RBI for the Sharks, while three different HPU pitchers combined for the shutout. Harrison threw the first 3.2 innings, Erik Peterson added 1.1 of shutout work and Edward Lee grabbed the win with four nearly perfect innings in relief, allowing just two hits, no walks and he struck out one.
