WAIPAHU, O`ahu--Former Hawai`i Pacific slugger
Joseph Gallagher laced a two-out double to drive in two runs in the sixth inning against his former team to help his current squad Hawai`i Hilo salvage a doubleheader split on Friday night at Hans L`Orange Park, 7-4.
The graduate third baseman, who hit three home runs last spring during a shortened season against the Vulcans, stroked a double down the right field line to drive in a pair of runs to help break a 4-4 tie. Earlier in the inning, the Vulcans had put three runners on base and brought one of them home with the help of two walks and a Sharks error. When the inning was over, the Vulcans had taken the lead (7-4).
John Kea would come out of the bullpen to earn the save in the bottom of the seventh, striking out all three batters he faced.
The UH Hilo win gave them a divide on the day, after dropping the afternoon contest, 8-0. The victory improved UHH's overall record to 10-4, while the non-conference nightcap left their Pacific West Conference mark at 0-2. HPU is now 8-4 on the young season and 2-0 in conference play.
Gallagher had three RBI in the game, while teammate
Casey Yamauchi had two of UHH's seven hits. The Vulcan shortstop also scored twice and had two walks.
The Vulcans scored first in the opening stanza when Gallagher drove home Yamauchi with a single. But the Sharks scored four runs in the third thanks in part to a three-run inside the park homer by speedster Diego Harris, taking a 4-1 lead.Â
UH Hilo would answer in the top of the fourth with
Mason Campbell's two-run double and three total runs (4-4), which is where the score settled until the top of the sixth and the UHH outburst.Â
Christian DeJesus would throw 100 pitches through six innings of work to earn the win. He allowed seven hits, four runs, walked four and struck out six. Kea, the Vulcans all-time saves leader with 25, needed just 18 pitches to get his three strikeouts in the seventh.
The Vulcans and Sharks will play two more non-conference games on Saturday, with start time for game one set for 10 am.
