Vulcans Sweep Sharks

KANEOHE, Hawai'i– The UH Hilo softball team secured the sweep over host Hawai'i Pacific with a 5-0 win in the second part of the day's doubleheader.

The Vulcans (4-2 overall) began conference play with a strong 2-0 start while the Sharks (6-9) slipped 0-2.

The Vulcans started off strong again, posting up three runs in the first inning. Taisha Bratton cashed in one run with a deep shot to right center and then Arissa Lugo singled to left field which brought in two more (3-0).

Jayda Favela, who was 4-for-4 in her at-bats and in stolen base attempts, started a two-out rally in the second inning by working a walk. Favela then stole second base, advanced to third off a single by Brandee Chinen, and scored off an HPU throwing error (4-0).

UHH would score one more run before it was all said and done. Nikki Zielinski doubled to center to send home the final run of the game (5-0).

Alexis Lacy pitched a complete shutout in her first start. The Freshman had good defensive support and she did a good job of working out of tough situations. Lacy only gave up one walk and eight hits resulting in eight HPU runners left on bag.

The Vulcans play again tomorrow Sunday, Feb. 27 against Chaminade at Sand Island Park. The games are scheduled for 12 and 2pm HST.
