HILO, Hawai'i– The Vulcan bats were hot all night as UHH racked up 13 hits and pushed across 13 runs in their 13-2 victory over San Diego Christian College at Wong Stadium.
UHH will begin the 2022 season 1-0, while San Diego Christian fell 1-8 in their overall record.
The Vulcans had two big innings where the most damage was done. It all began in the fourth inning where UH Hilo was leading 2-1. The bases were loaded with Casey Yamauchi up to bat. Yamauchi roped a two-out double to the left field fence, cashing in three runs that expanded the Vulcans lead, 5-1. Eric Peterson then stepped up and poked a single to right-center, successfully scoring speedy Yamauchi (6-1).
Five runs gave the Vulcans some cushion over the Hawks, but it wasn't until the sixth where UHH created a deficit that would be almost impossible for San Diego Christian to overcome.
Senior Brett Komatsu jump started the sixth with a bunt that caught the third baseman sleeping. Yamauchi then laced a double down the left field line that scored Komatsu (7-1).
The Vulcans successfully rattled the Hawks' defense as they then loaded the bases by two errors and a walk with only one out in the inning. Kobie Russell then launched a grand slam that inflicted the most damage on the scoreboard, bringing UHH up 12-1.
The Hawks were able to push one more run across before the night ended, but the damage was done and the night closed 13-2 in the Vulcans favor.
