Box Score HILO, Hawai`i--UH Hilo batters slapped out ten hits and five Vulcan pitchers did their jobs as Hawai`i Hilo topped visiting San Diego Christian 4-2 in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Wong Stadium.
Casey Yamauchi and
Brett Komatsu had three hits each and
John Kea closed out the ninth inning for his 28th career save to help the Vulcans move to 2-0 heading into the evening nightcap (start time, 6:30). The Hawks are now 1-9.
Yamauchi and Komatsu combined to score UH Hilo's go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth, igniting a two-out rally. Komatsu doubled, stole third and came home on Yamauchi's infield single. Earlier (second inning), Komatsu singled home a run to get the Vulcans on the board.
Yamauchi also scored an insurance run in the seventh after rapping a single and eventually scoring on
Kobie Russell's sacrifice fly.
Kea put a ribbon on the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, after his bullpen teammates set him up.
Christian DeJesus got the start and went 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs.
Jamieson Hirayama quelled the Hawk rally in the fourth by getting an out, and
Jacob Liberta and
Alden Norquist each added two scoreless innings to set the table for UHH's all-time saves leader.
Ryan Lystlund had four of San Diego Christian's seven hits, including a triple and a run scored in the fourth.
Game three of the five-game series starts shortly, followed by a Sunday doubleheader that begins at noon.
