HILO, Hawai'i– Casey Yamauchi delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh that lifted his team 5-4 over San Diego Christian Saturday Night at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans (3-0) and the Hawks (1-11) play again Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12pm and 3:30pm HST which will close out their five-game series.
UH Hilo was leading the game 3-0, until the Hawks' big fifth inning. SDCC strung together four hits and pushed across four runs, stealing the lead from UHH 4-3.
The resilient Vulcans answered back right away with a standup double by Ryan Cho. Cho advanced to third off a bunt by Kekaulike Kalua and then scored off a wild pitch.
With the game tied, the Vulcans buckled down on defense, holding the Hawks in the sixth inning.
The Red and Black stepped up to the challenge with a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Eric Peterson singled to left and Brett Komatsu drew a walk to set up Yamauchi with the game-winning hit.
Six Vulcans tossed tonight, but it was UHH reliever John Kea who was awarded the win. Kea replaced Devin Meyers in the seventh, inheriting runners on first and second in the tied up ball game. Kea, an expert in his role, efficiently threw the final out that gave his team the opportunity to win it in the bottom of the seventh.
