HILO, Hawai'i–The UH Hilo softball team rolled off their eight-inning walk-off win with a mercy for the second part of Sunday's doubleheader. The Vulcans racked up 14 hits in their 8-0 victory over the Penguins at the UHH Softball Field.
UH Hilo is on a six-game winning streak, 10-4 overall and 8-2 in the PacWest Conference while Dominican fell 8-19 overall and 5-13 in the PacWest.
The Vulcans found their offensive groove after a close first game, scoring six runs by the third inning with nine hits.
In the third inning
Chloe Domingo hit a two-run homer to left field, scoring UHH's fourth and fifth runs. Immediately after
Mari Kimoto singled to left center and advanced to second when
Jayda Favela was hit by a pitch. With two outs and two runners on bag,
Brandee Chinen hit a base knock to center that scored Kimoto for the final run of the inning (6-0).
The Red and Black experienced some deja vu in the fifth. Kimoto singled to get on base and then Chinen produced another single to score Kimoto (7-0). With the bases loaded, Prewitt ended the game by stealing home off a wild pitch (8-0).
Sara Bhatt threw a five-inning shutout with three strikeouts. Bhatt only allowed three hits from the 19 batters she faced.
The Vulcans play again tomorrow at 12 and 2pm against Dominican at the UHH Softball Field.
