IRVINE, Calif.--Host Concordia used standout starting pitching and hits from almost everyone in the order to take two from Hawai`i Hilo in a baseball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at The Eagles Field, 7-1 and 7-2.
The Eagles improved to 5-1 in the Pacific West Conference and to 11-8-1 on the year. The Vulcans are now 6-6 in the PacWest and 17-8 overall.
Concordia and UH Hilo will square off again on Tuesday in another twinbill, with the start time set for 2 pm PT (11 am Hawaii).
In the opener CUI's Evan Larsen went eight solid innings on the hill to pick up his first win of the season. Larsen allowed seven hits, just the one run, walked two and fanned nine Vulcan batters. UH Hilo scored its lone run in the fourth inning when
Eric Peterson drove home
Mason Campbell with a single. In fact, Peterson's base hit was one of nine hits for UHH, but all of them were singles. Designated hitter
Joseph Gallagher and catcher
Jaryn Kanbara each had a pair of hits to lead the visitors.Â
Christian DeJesus took the loss for UHH on the bump (1-2). He allowed four runs in five innings of work, but his defense didn't help him with five errors in the contest.
In the nightcap, the Eagles built a 4-0 lead through the first three innings of play and allowed only two Vulcan runs the rest of the way. Concordia pitcher Matthew Des Marets went the first six innings and allowed only four hits, one run, one walk and he struck out one.
The Eagles handed Vulcan pitcher
Aaron Davies his first loss of the season (3-1). Davies gave up 12 hits in seven innings of work, allowed six earned runs and struck out four. Concordia would go on to rap out 14 hits in the nine inning contest, including three each by Shane Wallace and Michael Dixon. Wallace also scored three times, while Dixon had a pair of doubles and four RBI.
Lucas Sakay had two of UHH's five hits in the second game. UHH scored in the sixth inning when Gallagher doubled and eventually came home on
Kekaulike Kalua's sacrifice fly. In the eighth, the Vulcans added a run fueled in part by an error, a wild pitch and
Casey Yamauchi's single.
After games with Concordia, the Vulcans will play a four-game series at Biola, with a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
