LA MIRADA, Calif.--The UH Hilo baseball team nearly surpassed Biola in the second part of the day's doubleheader, but the Eagles managed to come up on top 8-7 at the Eagles Diamond.
Biola rose 10-8 overall and 7-3 in the PacWest Conference while the Vulcans dropped 18-11 overall and 7-9 in the PacWest.
The game was tied on four occasions. In the first inning, the Vulcans scored first. Lucas Sakay came home off a sacrifice fly by Jaryn Kanbara (1-0). Biola responded immediately with a run of their own (1-1).
In the fifth the Vulcans were trailing by one run and tied the game back up. Joseph Gallagher doubled to right field to get the inning started and was scored by a Kanbara single (4-4).
The Vulcans led again in the sixth when Gallagher drove in Casey Yamauchi who singled to begin the inning (5-4). Their lead was short lived as the Eagles matched their one run in the bottom of the sixth (5-5).
BU scored two more in the seventh (7-5), but UHH responded with two in the top of the eighth (7-7). Yamauchi began the eighth by doubling to left field and came home when Mason Campbell was hit by a pitch (7-6). Kekaulike Kalua advanced the final run for the Vulcans with a sacrifice fly that allowed Sakay to steal home (7-7).
At the end of the day the Eagles got the last say, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth (8-7).
Six pitchers saw time on the hill including: Barron Holtz (2.2), Jamieson Hirayama (0.1), Ty Honda (3.0), Cody Hirata (0.0), Alden Noquist (0.0), and Takashi Umino (2.0).
