LA MIRADA, Calif.--The UH Hilo baseball team caught a break against Biola in the final game of the four-game series, beating BU 9-7 at the Eagles Diamond.
The Vulcans have been playing well against the Eagles, but finally caught the break they needed to come up on top.
UH Hilo improved 19-12 overall and 8-10 in the PacWest Conference, while Biola dropped 11-9 and 8-4 in the PacWest.
Joseph Gallagher set the tone with a two-run home run in the first inning (2-0).
Kekaulike Kalua doubled to lead off the second inning and eventually scored off a fielder's choice (3-0).
The Vulcans scored two more in the third frame from a Jaryn Kanbara no-doubter (5-0).
Biola started cutting down UH Hilo's lead, pushing runs across in the third and fourth (5-2).
An exciting seventh inning gave the Vulcans the run support they would need to pull off the win. UHH posted four runs, bumping them up 9-2.
Joshua Fuentes blasted his first collegiate home run that scored two runs (7-2). Kanbara drove in Eric Peterson with a deep double to left (8-2). Mason Campbell hit in the Vulcans final run with a sacrifice fly (9-2).
The Eagles did not go down quietly, unleashing a big five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh. John Kea rose to the challenge and limited the Eagles' damage (9-7).
Aaron Davies got the start, throwing an efficient 5.2 innings where he only allowed three hits and two runs to score while striking out seven batters. John Kea closed the game, getting his seventh save of the season.
The Vulcans will travel back to Hawaii and gear up for their next home series. UH Hilo is set to play Academy of Art Friday (Mar. 25) and Saturday (Mar. 26) at 3:30 and 7pm HST at Wong Stadium.
