HILO, Hawai'i–The UH Hilo baseball team split today's twin bill with Academy of Art. The Vulcans won the first game 7-3 and lost the second 9-1 at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans are now 20-13 and 9-11 in the PacWest Conference while the Urban Knights are 9-20 and 3-11 in the PacWest.
James Yamasaki started the first game and showcased a strong seven-inning stretch where he only let up six hits and three runs while firing in two strikeouts. Takashi Umino and John Kea then threw one inning a piece where they both produced 1-2-3 innings.
Academy of Art was leading 3-1 until the Vulcans had a big five-run inning that pushed them ahead 6-3. Six hits and two Urban Knight errors led to UH Hilo's seventh-inning rally.
UHH totalled 11 hits in their 7-3 win. Casey Yamauchi and Mason Campbell were nearly perfect at the plate. Yamuachi went 3-for-4 and Campbell went 2-for-3.
ART U got the best of UHH in the second part of the double hitter where the Vulcans loss 9-1. The Urban Knights out-hit UH Hilo 13-7. Academy of Art's Collin Carriger was dealing on the hill, going the complete nine-innings. He also only allowed seven hits in nine innings while striking out six batters.
The Vulcans play Academy of Art again tomorrow (Mar. 26) at 3:30 and 7pm.
