HILO, Hawai'i– Christian DeJesus started on the rubber in the Vulcans 6-4 victory over Academy of Art at Wong Stadium for the third game of the PacWest Conference four-game series.
The Vulcans improved 21-13 (10-11 PacWest) while the Urban Knights dropped 9-21 (3-12 PacWest).
DeJesus threw for six whole innings and faced two batters in the seventh where he allowed 11 hits and three runs to score while striking out five batters.
Jamieson Hirayama was the first Vulcan in relief and he obtained the first two outs of the seventh frame. Hirayama was then replaced by Cody Hirata who threw to two batters before John Kea came in to close out the seventh and eventually the game. Kea picked up his eighth save of the season.
Most of the Vulcans' run damage was created in the first two innings. The Vulcans scored three runs in the first inning. Mason Campbell hit in Casey Yamauchi who singled to start the game (1-0). Ryan Cho then blasted a two-run homer that scored Joseph Gallagher who walked prior to Cho's at-bat (3-0).
The Vulcans responded to ART U's one run in the bottom of the first with two more in the next frame thanks to back-to-back triples by Bradyn Yoshida and Lucas Sakay and then a sacrifice fly by Brett Komatsu (5-1).
UHH scored one more run in the fifth. Sakay singled to score what would be the Vulcans' last run (6-1).
From then on out the Vulcans held their ground and limited the Urban Knights to three more runs in the 6-4 ball game.
The Vulcans are playing the fourth game now.
