HILO, Hawai`i--Freshman lefthander
Alexis Lacy tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener and her Hawai`i Hilo teammates cashed in on eight Holy Names errors and 13 total hits to sweep a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at the UHH Softball Field, 3-0 and 6-2.
It was the second day in a row for the Vulcans to post a doubleheader sweep over the Hawks. UH Hilo improved to 8-4 overall and to 6-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Holy Names is now 4-19 on the season and 2-10 in the PacWest.
In the first game, Lacy was spotless for the third straight time. She has tossed three consecutive shutouts, including two now against Holy Names and another versus Hawaii Pacific. She hasn't given up a run in her last 19 innings in the pitcher's circle. The Anaheim Hills, Calif. native gave up just four hits today, walked one and fanned two.Â
Lacy, now 3-0, loaded the bases in the first inning but worked out of that jam, and allowed a Hawk runner to reach third base in the third, but other than that didn't run into any trouble. She retired the final six batters that she faced, and induced an equitable nine fly outs and ten ground outs.
She got all the runs that she would need in the first inning. The Vulcans used an RBI single from
Brandee Chinen and a ground ball RBI from
Taisha Bratton to push across a pair of runs. They added an unearned run in the sixth for insurance. UHH had just five hits off of Holy Names' Haighley Kissee, all singles, two of them by Chinen.Â
In the second game,
Sara Bhatt took her turn in the pitcher's circle, tossing six innings and allowing just three hits, a run and two strikeouts for the win. She is now 5-1 on the season. UH Hilo had eight hits in the game, including a home run by Bratton.
Chloe Domingo had two of those base knocks, including an RBI-single in the sixth inning.
Bratton's home run was in the third inning, and Chinen had a two-run double in the fourth. Holy Names scored in the top of the fourth using a walk, a sacrifice and a base hit, and again in the seventh the same way.
The Vulcans will take their four-game winning streak into a four-game series with Dominican this coming Sunday and Monday. Start time for both doubleheaders will be noon.
