HILO, Hawaii–The UH Hilo baseball team dug deep in their 7-6 PacWest Conference victory over Hawai'i Pacific, finishing what could possibly be their most interesting game of the season.
The Vulcans (24-13, 13-11 PacWest) and Sharks (17-18, 11-13 PacWest) split their conference series 2-2, each taking two victories on their home fields.
The game began at 3:30pm on Apr. 9 and was suspended due to inclement weather. The game was then rescheduled to resume at 10:30am the next day (Apr. 10) right where it left off. The game didn't actually begin until 11:30am today (Apr. 10) because of a further rain delay.
Once the game resumed, it picked up in the top of the sixth with the Vulcans leading 6-4. John Kea replaced Davies on the mound who was dominating prior to the game's postponement.
Kea closed up the sixth inning with a strikeout, but the Sharks bit back in the seventh in a two-run game-extending homer (6-6).
They proceeded to play three-extra innings until the Vulcans walked off in the bottom of the tenth. Casey Yamauchi doubled to begin the inning and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by Mason Campbell. The Sharks then intentionally walked Joseph Gallagher and Kekaulike Kalua, which put Ryan Cho up to bat with bases loaded and just one out. Hawai'i Pacific's pitcher hit Cho which pushed the game-winning run across.
Kea picked up his sixth win of the season where he tallied six strikeouts.
The Vulcans are playing now in a nine-inning non-conference game.
