Women's Volleyball Finalizes 2022 Recruit Class

Trio addition of Childs, Kenoi and Lee completes Leonard's largest recruit class.

HILO, Hawai‘i — With the additions of two transfers and an additional incoming freshman, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women's volleyball head coach Chris Leonard announced the completion of his 2022 recruiting class with seven total newcomers set to arrive to the Big Island for what will be the fourth-year head coach's largest class.

Kamryn Childs, Mahina Kenoi and Imani Lee are the latest additions following previously announced signings of Isabella Hadaller and Emerson Reinke, as well as Taylor Tullo and Sophia Charpentier.

The Vulcans are returning 10 players after seven departures — five to graduation — from a season ago. Four of those returnees saw significant playing time during the 2021 campaign that resulted in a 17-7 overall record (14-6 PacWest) and a fourth-place Pacific West Conference finish.

A five-foot-10 middle blocker/outside hitter, Childs comes to the Big Island from Utah State University Eastern where she spent the last two seasons after graduating from Syracuse High School (Utah) in 2020.

“Kamryn is a super athletic and versatile player who has the ability to make a great impact at the net as an attacker and as a blocker,” Leonard said.

Childs played club for Utah Storm and also participated in track & field in high school where she was a 6A High Jump State Champion while also setting a new 6A state record.

The Utah-native intends to major in business.

Kenoi returns to her hometown after having played her freshman season at Orange Coast College in Mesa, California. The five-foot-six defensive specialist/outside hitter is a 2019 Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i graduate where she also participated in track & field.

“We're excited to have Mahina return home to Hawai‘i and join our Vulcan 'ohana,” Leonard said. “She is a multi-skilled player who shines on offense and defense. Her digging and passing prowess will bolster our Vulcan defensive unit and her all-around game will be a big asset to our program.”

The Hilo-native played club for the Pi‘oPi‘o Bears and intends to major in communications.

Lee arrives to Hawai‘i Hilo from Hacienda Heights, California where the Glen A. Wilson High School grad played four years for coach Landon Sumner. The five-foot-six utility player played club for T-Street and also participated in basketball and track & field in high school.

“Imani is a great addition to our team,” Leonard said. “She is a great defender, a tough server and possesses a very competitive and team-first mindset. We recruited her primarily as defensive specialist/libero, but she has hops and has been an aggressive attacker throughout her high school and club career. I know she will come in ready to compete each and every day.”

She intends to major in psychology.

This is the largest recruit class (seven players) that I have brought in. They have big shoes to fill, but I'm sure that their collective athleticism, skills and mindset added to an outstanding group of returning players will make for a great Vulcan team. I can't wait to get this group in to the gym to prepare for a challenging non-conference and PacWest Conference schedule.
Chris Leonard, Hawai‘i Hilo Women's Volleyball Head Coach

The women's volleyball team opens fall camp Monday, Aug. 8 as it'll quickly gear up for the Hawai‘i-Alaska Challenge set to take place Aug. 19-20 on O‘ahu at the home courts at Chaminade University of Honolulu and Hawai‘i Pacific University.

The Vulcans will return to O‘ahu a week later for a four-game slate in the Magic Island Hawai‘i Classic at the Honolulu Convention Center.

PacWest Conference play begins Sept. 10 at home against HPU.
