Hawai‘i Hilo Athletics Partners with Icon Source to Provide NIL tool

Icon Suite to simplify name, image and likeness process for Vulcan student-athletes.

HILO, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i at Hilo Athletics has partnered with Icon Source to launch Icon Suite, an innovative name, image and likeness tool for all Vulcan student-athletes to provide a seamless, compliant system for connecting brands, alumni and other interested parties for NIL deals.

The Icon Suite local exchange application software will connect local companies with student-athletes through a custom Hawai'i Hilo marketplace, simultaneously simplifying the NIL administrative processes for Vulcan athletics administrators.

"We are excited to partner with Icon Source and give our Vulcans student-athletes the tools needed to navigate the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) marketplace and potentially capitalize on the benefits it could bring," Hawai'i Hilo director of athletics Patrick Guillen said.

Interested businesses and Hawai'i Hilo supporters will be able to readily identify and engage with potential student-athlete partners through this compliant marketplace software.

"Icon Source is a resource for our student-athletes to utilize with local and regional partners and brands, and hope it will open new doors for endorsement opportunities for them and our local companies," Guillen continued.

Icon Suite is a full-service system that makes it easy for athletes to disclose NIL deals through the student login and allows compliance officers to access contracts and review analytics across demographic breakdowns and other key metrics.

The Hawai'i Hilo-branded gateway also provides guidance, education and facilitation of the athlete sponsorship process supported by Icon Source.

"Icon Source is thrilled to partner with University of Hawai'i at Hilo to adopt this type of software and provide the Icon Suite for all Vulcan student-athletes and the Hawai'i Hilo athletics department," Icon Source Executive Vice President of Collegiate Drew Butler said. "Businesses and interested parties on and around the islands now have a safe and compliant platform to facilitate NIL opportunities with Hawai'i Hilo student-athletes."

Icon Source is the leading digital marketplace connecting brands and athletes for endorsements and partnerships with an established history of facilitating deals for professional and college athletes, handling all the administrative aspects of name, image and likeness deal-making including contracts, tax documentation and payment services to ensure successful connections for both brands and athletes.

Name, Image, Likeness (NIL)

In July 2021, an interim policy was adopted by all NCAA divisions to allow college athletes to have the opportunity to benefit from their name, image and likeness.

  • Individuals can engage in NIL activities that are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located. Colleges and universities may be a resource for state law questions.
  • College athletes who attend a school in a state without an NIL law can engage in this type of activity without violating NCAA rules related to name, image and likeness.
  • Individuals can use a professional services provider for NIL activities.
  • Student-athletes should report NIL activities consistent with state law or school and conference requirements to their school.

The national office and member schools and conferences will continue working with Congress to develop a clear solution that works for the entire country.
