HILO, Hawai'i – The Vulcans came out fierce to take set No. 2, but the Hawai'i Hilo women's volleyball team ultimately fell to Fresno Pacific in four sets Wednesday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the Vulcan Gymnasium.
It was a tough four-set battle with each frame seeing late score ties, but the Sunbirds were able to have more success pulling away for the wins by scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-22.
Hawai'i Hilo took an early five-point lead in the opening frame, but Fresno Pacific responded with a five-point rally. From there it was a back-and-forth battle with ties at 11, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18 points until FPU closed it out with a cluster of scores to take it 25-20.
The second set started with the Vulcans coming in hot on a 7-0 lead. Again, FPU battled back, but this time, UH Hilo stood strong after a one-point game at 14-13 and strung together a 7-1 run to slide to a 25-19 victory.
Set No. 3 saw eight ties with the last one knotted up at 17-17 before the Sunbirds pieced together an 8-1 run to close it out.
The Vulcans didn't go down without a fight in the final frame, rallying for five points from a seven-point deficit to make it a 14-12 affair, then later stringing together four consecutive scores to make it a 19-18 deficit. The two teams traded blows to a 21-all score, but Fresno Pacific managed to pull away for match point and the win.

- Nikki Logan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) totaled a career-high 19 kills as she heated up as the game went along, getting seven and six kills in the third and fourth sets, respectively.
- Samara Cruz (Escondido, Calif./Escondido HS) was steady with a handful of kills throughout the match to finish with 14.
- The Sunbirds out blocked the Vulcans at a 10-4 chip. Madison Girnius, Chloe Melis and Kaiessa Sounart each contributed with four block assists apiece.
- Mahina Kenoi (Hilo, Hawai'i/Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i) totaled four aces.
- Emerson Reinke (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) dished out 25 assists for Hawai'i Hilo while Catie Speas and Anastassiya Barakhoyeva split the load with 16 and 17 assists, respectively.
What's Next
Hawai'i Hilo fell to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in PacWest Conference action while Fresno Pacific remained unbeaten at 3-0 (4-3 overall).
The Vulcans will play the final game of their first home stand next Monday, Sept. 19 against the Academy of Art (1-10 overall, 0-2 PacWest) at 7 p.m.
The Sunbirds travel to O'ahu to play Hawai'i Pacific and Chaminade this weekend.
