BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Dustin Franko notched the Vulcans' consecutive top five finish after finishing five shots under par for a tie at No. 4 in the individual leaderboard at the Western Washington University Invitational this week at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club.
As a team, Hawai'i Hilo shot rounds of 290, 292 and 296 for an 878 total at +14 to finish seventh among 17 competing schools.
Minus-five beats Franko's previous best of when he finished four-under at the Pearl Collegiate Classic in Feb. 2021.
At the end of round two, Franko stood tied atop the leaderboard with Holy Names' Edvin Backstrom, but a 75-shot final round dropped Franko three spots to No. 4.
Andrew Otani shot even to finish tied for 12th with Keith Ng (+9) at tied for 49th, Noah Lau (+10) tied for 53rd and Nicholas Gomez (+16) tied at 68th.
Among other Pacific West Conference teams, Holy Names finished No. 3 with the Vulcans placing ahead of Academy of Art (No. 13), Hawai'i Pacific (No. 15) and Chaminade (No. 17).
Western Washington finished in the top spot at -12 while Holy Names' Backstrom and Cal State Dominguez Hills' Andy Yoon finished tied for first with each eight-shots under as Backstrom took the individual title after winning the first playoff hole.
