FRESNO, California – The Sunbirds sank 26 shots from the free throw line, including 10 of their last 12 points, to edge the Hawai'i Hilo women's basketball team, 58-49, Tuesday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the Special Events Center.
The Vulcans found themselves down five points after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Mandi Kawaha to end the first period, but a 10-0 second-quarter run by the Sunbirds extended the deficit to nine at halftime.
Hawai'i Hilo put together eight consecutive points through the latter part of the third quarter to make it just a two-point game, but the Vulcans shot just 1 of 11 through the final 5:30 of the contest as FPU piled on at the free throw line to seal the win.
For the time being, the Vulcans remain at the No. 7 spot behind Point Loma Nazarene as Fresno Pacific lurks in the ninth slot of the conference standings.

- FPU got to the free throw line 16 times, hitting on 12 of them, before the Vulcans got to the charity stripe at the 3:05-mark of the second quarter. The Sunbirds finished 26 of 36 (72.2 percent) while Hawai'i Hilo shot 9 of 10 (90 percent).
- Overall, the Sunbirds were 14 of 47 from the field (29.8 percent) while the Vulcans shot 18 of 60 (30.0 percent).
- Mandi Kawaha led the Vulcans with 15 points and is now just 50 away from the program's all-time scoring spot.
- Kamalu Kamakawiwoole followed with 13 points and three blocks to move into a four-way tie for the program's second-most blocks (23) in a single season.
- Julie Ramirez and Joleen Corona led FPU with 11 points apiece. Ramirez went 1 of 7 from the field but shot 9 for 12 at the free throw line as Corona splashed three 3-pointers.
What's Next
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 7-11 overall, 4-8 PacWest while Fresno Pacific moved to a 7-11 record (2-9 PacWest).
The Vulcans continue on in northern California with a matchup against Dominican on Friday, Jan. 27. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. local Pacific Time (3:30 p.m. Hawai'i Time) followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. HT).
The two teams previously met Jan. 9 in Hilo with the Penguins winning, 75-60.
Hawai'i Hilo will return for two final home games on Feb. 8 and Feb. 11 — matching up again with Fresno Pacific on the latter date for Senior Night.
The Sunbirds will host Point Loma Nazarene Jan. 28.
