HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo men's tennis team got its 2023 campaign started Friday afternoon but fell to No. 9 HPU, 7-0, at the Kailua Racquet Club in east O'ahu.
Luca Matheiowetz and Filippo Di Perna were able to take a set each out of the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots, respectively, but ultimately fell in the third deciding set as HPU got the sweep.
In the No. 3 doubles slot, Joshua Liu and Di Perna were down just one set, 5-4, but HPU got the wins in the first and second flights to earn the point before concluding their match.
Hawai'i Hilo (1-0 overall) will remain on O'ahu to take on Holy Names on Saturday before closing with No. 17 Azusa Pacific on Sunday.
