Waki Scores Career High But Vulcans Eliminated by No. 22 APU

Senior Jenna Waki scored 21 points, but Hawai‘i Hilo fell to the Cougars, 64-55.

AZUSA, California – Senior Jenna Waki put in a career-high 21 points but it wouldn't be enough to catch No. 22 Azusa Pacific as the Cougars defeated the Vulcans, 64-55, Thursday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the Felix Event Center.

Waki scored 15 of her points in the second half and finished with five 3-pointers along with five rebounds, three assists and one steal, but despite the scoring outburst, APU managed to maintain the double-digit lead it held for the majority of the contest.

With Thursday's loss, Biola wrapped up the sixth and final spot in the PacWest Championships set for March 2-4 at Chaminade University of Honolulu on O'ahu. Joining the Eagles will be Azusa Pacific, Concordia University Irvine, HPU, Dominican and Point Loma Nazarene.

Hawai'i Hilo has needed to win its remaining games while the Eagles needed to lose all of theirs in order for the Vulcans to have been able to qualify for the six-team postseason tournament.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mandi Kawaha totaled 14 points with two 3-pointers, two free throws, three rebounds, five assists and two steals. The Vulcans all-time leading scorer and assists leader moved up to No. 2 in the career all-time rankings for 3-pointers (139) and free throws (241), surpassing Sara Shimizu (2018-2022) and Sheila Azevedo (2007-2009), respectively.
  • Waki had previously set an unofficial career high of 18 points in a three-point exhibition loss to Division-I UNLV earlier this season before scoring 14 points against CUI last month to raise her official single-game career scoring mark.
  • The Cougars finished 81.0 percent at the free throw line after getting there 21 times and sinking a season-high 17 shots while the Vulcans went 9 for 11 (81.8 percent).

  • Azusa Pacific was led by Molly Whitmore's double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ty Lee Manuel scored a team-high 19 points.
