SAN MARCOS, California – A quick one-two punch in the form of two goals within eight minutes from Andrew Rehedul and Shawn Clarke was all the Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer team needed as it posted a consecutive shutout in a 2-0 victory over CSU San Marcos in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon at The Cage.
Vulcans got on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute first with Koki Hamada sending a long ball down the field to set up Rehedul and Aidan Santos flying down the other end. Santos took a ground-shot from the corner of the penalty box as Rehedul came crashing in to get an extra foot on the ball to fling it through the keeper's legs for the score.
Eight minutes later, the Vulcans again made swift connections to go coast-to-coast for the goal. Christian Souza's free kick flipped off the top of Alex Carmona's head at midfield as Santos made an incredible effort to not only save the ball from going out of bounds over a sliding Cougars defender, but also to flick it forward to set Clarke up. A CSUSM defender ended up on Clarke's backside with nothing but the keeper in the way of the goal as he snuck the ball in from 11 yards out for the score.
Santos was credited with the assist on both scores.
San Marcos was kept out of the score column for the first time this season. The Cougars applied offensive pressure with two early shots on goal in the first six minutes of the match but would finish with just one additional attempt.
Souza was credited with all three saves for his third career shutout.
