HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer took a 1-0 victory over UT Dallas on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at the Vulcan Soccer Field.
The lone score came in the 21st minute, when Gudmundur Ingason sent a through ball down the left side to Nico Rahman, who was fouled in the box by the UT Dallas goalkeeper. Keita Goto converted the ensuing penalty kick for his second goal of the season — both on direct free kick opportunities.
UT Dallas held the edge in play taking all eight of the match's corner kicks and outshooting the Vulcans, 8-2, but had just one shot-on-goal.
Diego Bastias made the lone save in the 55th minute getting his paw on a direct shot from 10 yards out to deflect the ball up against the crossbar. Wednesday's match was the first start for Bastias in his second year with the Vulcans.
Hawai'i Hilo will now hit the road for six away matches through the beginning of October with the next home contest set for Oct. 10 against Chaminade. In an unofficial email survey sent out, the Vulcans are just one of three teams in the country to play six consecutive road contests — the only one in Division II.
