No. 8 Vulcans Begin Title Defense with Shutout of Urban Knights

Two-time defending PacWest Conference Champions blanked Academy of Art, 6-0.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – The No. 8 Hawai'i Hilo Women's Soccer team opened the defense of its back-to-back Pacific West Conference Championships on the road with a 6-0 shutout of Academy of Art Monday afternoon at Paul Goode Field.

The Vulcans got on the scoreboard just minutes into the game as two-time PacWest Conference Player of the Week Teani Arakawa raced around the right edge of the ART U defense to flick a score in on the inside of the opposite post. Arakawa also later added in goal No. 3 in the 35th minute on a corner kick that was deflected in by an Urban Knights defender.

Samy Sierra (34'), Adree Johnson (43') and Megan Donovan (54') each netted their first career goals as Jazlynn Ellis (63') added her second collegiate score — and second in consecutive matches.

Majae De Leon and Filippa Graneld were credited with assists on the fifth and sixth goals, respectively.

Hawai'i Hilo was just too much for the Urban Knights, as the Vulcans posted a 33-4 shot advantage at 19-2 on shots on goal.

Phoebe Barnes and Courtney Linn again combined in goal for a consecutive team shutout with the latter securing two saves in the second half.

With the victory, the Vulcans extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 31 games dating back to Oct. 3, 2021.

UP NEXT

Hawai'i Hilo moved to a 5-0-1 record (1-0-0 Pacific West Conference) while Academy of Art moved to 1-6-0 (0-1-0 PacWest).

The Vulcans will continue in Northern California against Dominican (Sept. 28) and Fresno Pacific (Sept. 30).

Hawai'i Hilo will return home Oct. 7 to host HPU to start a string of six home games.

BACK IN THE TOP 25

After a week missing from the top 25 poll, the Vulcans landed at No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Week 3 Poll released last Tuesday.

Hawai'i Hilo was ranked No. 14 in the preseason and moved up two spots before seemingly receiving zero votes for the Week 2 poll.

The Vulcans also climbed up to No. 1 in the West Region rankings.
