SAN DIEGO, California – Kamalu Kamakawiwoole nailed back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute of play to shut the door on the Sea Lions as the Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball team defeated Point Loma, 74-71, Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at the Golden Gymnasium.
Kamakawiwoole tallied a career-high 27 points (11-15 FG) as the Vulcans shot 80.0 percent in the final quarter, hitting on their final six shot attempts (along with going 4 of 4 at the free throw line). The fifth-year senior banked-in the go-ahead shot at the 4:30 mark to make it a 61-60 score.
The two teams traded blows as the Sea Lions thrice made it just a single-point score, but Kamakawiwoole's two treys — the second of which was splashed with 11 seconds to go — helped extend the Vulcans out for the last time. PLNU managed to sneak inside for a quick two points before forcing a turnover on the ensuing inbound to gain final possession with five seconds left, but Hawai'i Hilo stood strong as Point Loma's three-point heave fell short as time expired.
