Vulcans Tennis Welcomes Guilherme De Medeiros as New Head Coach

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Athletics welcomes Guilherme De Medeiros as the new Vulcans Men's and Women's Tennis head coach.

A former tennis student-athlete at HPU on O'ahu from 2018-2021, De Medeiros returns to Hawai'i after wrapping up his collegiate career at Long Island University and earning a Master's of Business Administration. While in New York, he also spent time as a tennis pro coaching at SPORTIME NY, home of the prestigious John McEnroe Tennis Academy.

"It is great to be back to Hawai'i. From the moment I got here, I've been welcomed by everyone. The whole athletics staff and players have been super supportive, and I'm grateful to be a part of the Hawai'i Hilo family," De Medeiros said. "It's an honor to coach such a talented and hard-working group of student-athletes. We're all looking forward to building great relationships and maintaining the history of a championship-winning program. I'll make sure they have the best time of their lives and improve daily on and off the court. I mua Vulcans!"

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, De Medeiros was a six-time ITA Scholar-Athlete during his collegiate career, having initially started at Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho before transferring to HPU and further to Long Island for graduate school.

As a member of the (HPU) Sharks, he was a part of the 2019 squad that got the best of the Vulcans to claim the Pacific West Conference title in addition to making it all the way to the NCAA Championships semifinal round. In 2020, HPU claimed third place at the ITA National Indoor Championships.

At LIU, De Medeiros helped the newly-added men's tennis program get things started as the Division-I Sharks wrapped up both of their first two seasons in the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinal round.

"First of all, I would like to aloha coach Kallen Mizuguchi, who did a wonderful job over the last six years leading the tennis program," Hawai'i Hilo director of athletics Patrick Guillen said. "I am happy to announce Guilherme De Medeiros as our next head coach. We are very fortunate to bring on an up-and-coming coach who played at inter-island rival HPU. He has experience as a tennis instructor, assistant coach and is eager to take on the challenge of continuing our program's success. Most importantly, he knows our program, our culture and community and is a great fit. I have no doubt the program will continue to excel under his leadership."

De Medeiros began in his role last month.
