Women's Basketball Falls to Northern State

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball shot under 30 percent from the field as it fell to Northern State, 72-47, Friday afternoon as part of the 2024 De Luz Chevrolet Big Island Holiday Classic at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Both teams had a slow start combining to shoot 29 percent in the opening period — including going 0 of 7 together from beyond the arc. Still, the Wolves used an 11-0 run to take a seven-point lead after 10 minutes and later added on with a 10-0 second-quarter run to double their lead at the break.

NSU managed to build up as large of a lead as 22 points late in the third period, but the Vulcans scraped together a 14-5 scoring run to come within striking distance at a 59-47 deficit with just over six minutes remaining. However, the Wolves leaned on their size advantage and closed out the win by outscoring the Vulcans, 15-2, with 12 of those points coming from inside the paint.

Led by Madelyn Bragg's double-double on 23 points and 14 rebounds, Northern State finished 50.0 percent from the field with 44 of its points coming inside. NSU outrebounded UHH, 44-28, and converted for 17 second-chance points (67 percent).

Keirstyn Agonias led the Vulcans with 14 points followed by 13 from Caiyle Kaupu, who fouled out at the close of Hawai'i Hilo's early 14-5 scoring surge in the fourth quarter. KeanuMarie Huihui also totaled double-digit scoring figures with 11 points as Melanie Hiu collected a career-high 10 rebounds.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to a 1-2 record as Northern State moved to 4-2 overall.
