Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Hawai‘i Hilo Sports Information

Vulcans' Last-Dash Effort Falls Just Short to Royals

HILO, Hawai'i – KeanuMarie Huihui's final six-second dash across the court for a potential game-tying buzzer-beater layup fell just a tad too strong off the backboard as Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball fell to Douglas College, 72-70, Saturday evening in non-conference play at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Royals managed to take the lead with a 3-pointer at the 2:18 mark and later added on and traded free throws. Keirstyn Agonias hit a floater to make it a one-point game at 69-68 with 30 ticks to go. After subsequent made free throws, Agonias again got the ball and raced inside for the layup to bring it back to a single point. Douglas missed on the second of two free throws as Huihui corralled the ball and made the last mad scramble across the floor.

It was a pretty even battle all night long with 14 tied scores and 13 lead changes as the Vulcans built up to as large of a lead as nine points near the midway point of the third quarter. Douglas' Amar Thiara then managed to hit three 3-pointers coming off the bench to help the team from Canada back into it.

Hawai'i Hilo was again shorthanded with just six active players in rotation as Agonias put up a team-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting with five rebounds, four steals and two blocks. The Vulcans posted their best shooting percentages on the season at 40.3 percent from the field and .316 from beyond the arc.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 1-5 overall (0-2 PacWest) as Doulgas stayed at a 9-3 record (California Collegiate Athletic Association).
