HILO, Hawai'i – It was a tale of two games with lots of hitting to go around. The Hawai'i Hilo Baseball team was mercy-ruled by No. 4 Point Loma, 11-1, before bringing the bats alive to take a 6-3 victory to split Friday's Pacific West Conference twinbill at Francis Wong Stadium.
Sophomore pitcher Matthew O'Brien had a no-hit bid broken up in the top of the sixth inning as he claimed the complete-game victory on the mound for the Vulcans.
"We had a lot of energy in the dugout today which was a lot better because the first game we were kind of slow, and then second game everyone came out and we were on it all day," O'Brien said. "It was huge, a lot of energy and it was big time. Same mindset every time — get outs, and it worked for seven innings again."
For the Sea Lions, their four hits in Game 2 was the fewest total in a single game thus far this season.
The Vulcans have now won five of the last seven matchups against Point Loma. PLNU has entered each of the last 14 contests with a top-25 ranking, going all the way back to the 2019 season.
GAME 1: NO. 4 POINT LOMA11 - HAWAI'I HILO 1 (7 INNINGS)
- It was a quick two innings before the fourth-ranked Sea Lions managed to unload on the Vulcans. Bryson Hashimoto started things with a lead-off home run for what would be a three-hit, four-run inning for PLNU.
- Point Loma added on with runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, delivering the final blow on an RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it an 11-1 advantage.
- The Vulcans lone run came in the fifth inning as Hawai'i Hilo clustered back-to-back-to-back base hits to load the bases. Bradyn Yoshida drove the run on a solid single, but that would be all as three runners were left stranded.
- Per rules update as of the 2023 season, nine-inning PacWest Conference games will be subject to a 10-run mercy rule after the completion of seven innings.
- Hawai'i Hilo used five pitchers, combining to give up nine free bases to batters in addition to the 11-hit barrage mustered up by PLNU.
- Dylan Miller got the win, going the truncated complete distance with seven strikeouts and just one walk allowed.
GAME 2: NO. 4 POINT LOMA 0 - HAWAI'I HILO 6 (7 INNINGS)
- Matthew O'Brien had faced just one batter over the minimum of 15 heading into the top of the sixth inning with a no hitter intact. With two outs and a full count, Eric Smelko managed a base hit up the middle to break it up.
- Point Loma also managed to erase the shutout and threatened in the top of the seventh with three hits aided by an error for three unearned runs. O'Brien remained in the game and with the tying run at the plate, the lefty induced a fly ball to deep left-center field for Bradyn Yoshida to snag at the warning track and seal the victory.
- O'Brien posted a third-consecutive complete game to improve to a 3-1 record, tallying seven strikeouts and allowing just one free pass on a beaned batter.
- The Vulcans racked up eight hits from six different batters, starting early in the bottom of the first and executing on an RBI squeeze bunt from Cody Min, an RBI single by Alec Yamauchi and a sacrifice fly from Vance Oshiro. In the fourth, Hawai'i Hilo loaded the bases and drove in a pair of runs with RBI hits from Blake Tweedt and Mark Fedro. The final run came an inning later with Mason Cook getting on by a hit-by-pitch, stealing second, and coming around on to score on two wild pitches for a 6-0 lead.
