Men's Soccer Taken Down by Wolves for First Loss of Season

Hawai‘i Hilo was defeated, 2-0, to move to a 3-1-0 record.

MONMOUTH, Oregon – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer took its first defeat of the season with a 2-0 result to Western Oregon in non-conference action Monday afternoon at a breezy WOU Turf Field.

The Vulcans were scored on for the first time this season. In the 15th minute.

Hawai'i Hilo had a throw-in on the far end of the pitch, and after a brief battle for control, the ball bounced out to near midfield and was passed backward toward goalkeeper Christian Souza. But the pass wasn't strong enough, allowing Western Oregon's Michael Divano to make a play on the ball as he managed to get past for the easy empty-net score.

The Wolves later doubled up with another score in the 37th minute as Diego Andrade managed to be in the right place and right time to clean up after a diving stop-attempt by Souza on a cross inside the box.

Souza finished with three saves while WOU keeper Andre Schlaefli got the shutout.

Both teams were even on shots at 10-10, but the Vulcans had just one attempt (on goal) in the last 45 minutes of play.

For Western Oregon, it was its third consecutive win this season — all over Pacific West Conference teams (Jessup and Azusa Pacific). The Wolves, whose men's soccer program only began in 2022, were voted No. 2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
