HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer team took the show on the road and posted a consecutive 2-0 shutout, this time in a non-conference victory over Chaminade, Saturday afternoon at the Saint Louis School Field.
Early into the matchup, Shudai Ito sent a long ball down the field to Gabriel Gallardo dragging along a Silverswords defender before colliding with the goalkeeper inside the penalty area. Ito converted on the ensuing penalty kick for a fifth-minute score.
Kanata Taira later added the Vulcans' second goal in the 67th-minute on assists from Colby Lee and Gen Takahashi.
"These rivalry games are always hard because they know us really well. We know them really well," Hawai'i Hilo second-year head coach Diego Marroquin said. "Early in the season, we've already played two really good defensive teams. It causes us to have to look inward and figure out how we can improve and grow."
"We went 18 deep and everyone played," Marroquin continued. "Shows the depth of this squad — even the ones who didn't travel. A lot of players made an impact off the bench."
Christian Souza recorded career shutout No. 8 with five saves on the afternoon.
