HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Women's Soccer responded and answered back to defeat Vanguard, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at the Vulcan Soccer Field.
Delaney Barbee got the Vulcans on the scoreboard on a breakaway score in the 21st minute to finish the connection from Briana Kubli.
Vanguard managed to equalize the score in the 62nd minute as Francesa Lindstrom found a crack through three defenders and went top shelf from 23 yards out to hit the back of the net.
Just mere seconds later, Alia Bournay responded and launched a 31-yard laser to the back of the net for the four-year senior's first collegiate goal to put the Vulcans back up.
The Lions managed just two more shots (one on goal) while the Vulcans totaled four (one on goal) the rest of the way for the win.
OTHER NOTES
- Briana Kubli, who assisted on the Vulcans first score, still leads the PacWest Conference with three goals during league play. The senior transfer (Eugene, Oregon / Western Oregon) leads the team with seven points, all of which have come during the last six contests in conference play.
- Hawai'i Hilo currently claims first place in the PacWest Conference standings with 13 points followed by Azusa Pacific (nine) and Concordia (eight).
- The Vulcans are the only team to have already played six conference contests. HPU (1-2-2), Chaminade (1-2-2) and Jessup (0-3-2) are one behind with five while the rest of the conference schools have played four or less.

PACWEST PRESEASON POLL
Hawai'i Hilo was voted No. 3 in the Pacific West Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Vulcans finished the 2024 regular season at No. 2 in the conference standings and was one of four teams to qualify for the inaugural PacWest Conference Championships postseason tournament, falling to Point Loma in double overtime of the title game. The 2025 PacWest Championships will be hosted by defending champ Point Loma on Nov. 13-15 in San Diego.
