HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Women's Soccer played to a 1-1 tie with defending Pacific West Conference Champion Point Loma on Thursday afternoon at the Vulcan Soccer Field.

PLNU got on the scoreboard first by converting a goal-kick restart into a goal in the fifth minute for the early score by Kylie Garcia.

The Vulcans responded later in the half as Grace Ingalls' defensive stop in Sea Lions territory thrust the ball toward an open Melisa Ranvik to flush through the top-right corner for the equalizer in the 38th minute. Ranvik had just entered into the match 12 minutes prior and her score immediately followed up on an opportunity she shot past the keeper but bounced off the left post.

Hawai'i Hilo totaled eight shots the rest of the way (six on goal) to PLNU's five (one on goal).

OTHER NOTES

• First collegiate for freshman Ranvik.
• The Vulcans' six team fouls was the lowest single-game total of the season.
• This was the first matchup between the two teams since the Vulcans fell to Point Loma, 2-1, in last year's NCAA West Regional Second Round in San Diego. PLNU also managed to top the Vulcans in double overtime of last season's inaugural PacWest Conference Championship game played in Irvine.
• Hawai'i Hilo: 6-2-5 Overall (4-1-2 PacWest)
• Point Loma: 5-2-4 Overall (2-0-3 PacWest)
• Hawai'i Hilo currently sits at a tie for No. 2 in the PacWest Conference standings with Concordia at 14 points. Azusa Pacific is No. 1 with 15 points.
• It was Student Appreciation Day as attending University of Hawai'i at Hilo or Hawai'i Community College students were treated to free pizza and a Pepsi drink.

PACWEST PRESEASON POLL

Hawai'i Hilo was voted No. 3 in the Pacific West Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Vulcans finished the 2024 regular season at No. 2 in the conference standings and was one of four teams to qualify for the inaugural PacWest Conference Championships postseason tournament, falling to Point Loma in double overtime of the title game. The 2025 PacWest Championships will be hosted by defending champ Point Loma on Nov. 13-15 in San Diego.
