Women's Basketball Falls to Menlo

ATHERTON, California – The Oaks shot over 50 percent from the field as Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball opened its Northern California road trip with a 73-65 loss to Menlo in Pacific West Conference play on Monday evening at the Haynes-Prim Pavilion.

The Vulcans shot .349 (22-63 FG) with seven 3-pointers in comparison, but it just wasn't enough to catch the hot-shooting Oaks. Menlo's .529 field goal percentage was the second highest posted by an opponent this season. Early in the second quarter, Menlo managed to go 4 of 4 from the field for an 11-2 run to jump ahead by double digits as it seemingly never looked back.

The Oaks built up to their largest lead of 23 points late in the third quarter when the Vulcans responded with a 14-2 run to chip away at the deficit — capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Caiyle Kaupu. Kaupu hit another 3-pointer followed by KeanuMarie Huihui early in the fourth period to make it a seven-point game, but the Vulcans just couldn't quite make up the difference through the final five minutes.

Kaupu led with 25 points and 11 rebounds for her second career double-double — both coming against the Oaks.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 3-13 in PacWest play (5-17 overall) as Menlo moved to an 11-6 conference record (15-9 overall).

With the loss, the Vulcans have been eliminated from PacWest Championships postseason tournament contention. Four of the six spots have been claimed by Point Loma, Azusa Pacific, Dominican and Westmont with Fresno Pacific, Biola, HPU vying for the final two berths (Vanguard, Menlo and Jessup are ineligible for postseason play this season).
