HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Baseball opened the Pacific West Conference season with a twinbill defeat to Fresno Pacific by scores of 12-2 and 5-1 on Friday evening at the James "Jimmy" Correa Ballfield at Francis Wong Stadium.
The Sunbirds managed to total 30 hits through the two games while the Vulcans had just five in each contest.
Defensively, Hawai'i Hilo posted a clean sheet of zero errors with five total double plays.
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 0-2 in the PacWest (2-5 overall) as Fresno Pacific moved to a 2-0 conference record (7-6 overall).

GAME 1: FRESNO PACIFIC 12, HAWAI'I HILO 2 (7 INNINGS)
- Sunbird managed to get as fast of a jump as possible with a first-pitch home run by Micah Barkenhagen. The right fielder totaled four RBI in the opening game of the series with a sacrifice fly in the following inning and a two-out two-RBI single later in the top of the fifth.
- FPU managed to string together six hits for seven runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a grand slam by Aaron Martinez Jr.
- Vance Oshiro drove in the Vulcans' two runs of the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second. Oshiro finished with two hits and recorded five putouts and two assists at second base.
- The Sunbirds managed to plate the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to activate the 10-run mercy rule during PacWest Conference play.
- Devin Meyer was the first of five pitchers out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. In total, the Vulcans pitchers gave up nine free passes to first base with four walks and five hit by pitch.
GAME 2: FRESNO PACIFIC 0, HAWAI'I HILO 15 (7 INNINGS)
- FPU managed to lash out 14 hits, aided by five walks and four hit batsmen.
- After the Sunbirds got three runs in the first inning — the first scored via balk — Mason Cook responded with a solo shot in the bottom frame. Cook totaled two hits with six putouts and one assist.
