Baseball Rallies Twice But Comeback Bids Fall Short to Jessup

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Baseball surged late in both games but were ultimately outlasted by Jessup in both games of Saturday's Pacific West Conference doubleheader at the James "Jimmy" Correa Ballfield at Francis Wong Stadium. The Warriors won by scores of 13-8 and 7-6.

In Game 1, the Vulcans charged back from a 9-1 deficit to make it a three-score ballgame heading into the seventh inning, but Jessup managed to plate three more runs. In the nightcap, Hawai'i Hilo battled back from being behind, 7-1, before falling just short.

Noah Lane had a 4-for-5 outing at the plate with three RBI on a double and a two-run home run in the opening game.

Tui Ickes helped spark the comeback rally in Game 2 with a pinch-hit two-RBI double followed by another two-bagger in the bottom of the seventh.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 1-7 in the PacWest (3-10 overall) as Jessup moved to an 8-4 conference record (11-4 overall).

UP NEXT: Thursday, March 6 (6 PM) vs Azusa Pacific (Hilo, Hawai'i / James "Jimmy" Correa Ballfield at Francis Wong Stadium)

GAME 1: JESSUP 13, HAWAI'I HILO 8

  • Warriors totaled just six hits through the first three innings but plated seven runs with the help of two walks, two hit-by-pitch and one defensive error.
  • After Jessup added two more runs, the Vulcans began the uphill climb with three runs in the bottom of the fifth capped by Lane's two run bomb to cut the deficit to five runs. The next inning, Vance Oshiro cashed in with a two-RBI triple and scored on the next at-bat with Lane's RBI double to make it a three-score ballgame at 10-7.
  • Unfortunately, that would be it as the Warriors managed to plate three more runs to pull away for the win.

GAME 2: JESSUP 7, HAWAI'I HILO 6 (7 INNINGS)

  • It was a similar story with Jessup putting together eight hits to capitalize on four walks, one hit-by-pitch and three defensive errors for seven runs through the first four innings for a 7-1 advantage.
  • Facing a new pitcher and with a few new faces at the plate, the Vulcans exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back lead-off walks made way for Ickes' two-run double. Dane Palimo'o followed up with a pinch-hit single. Sy Stephens had a groundout RBI and Kalei Alana, playing in his first game, roped an RBI triple to left field to make it a two-run game.
  • Ickes led off the bottom of the seventh with another double and scored on a base hit by Noah Nakaoka to put the winning run at the plate, but that would be it as the Warriors survived with the one-run win.
