Baseball Walks Off Azusa Pacific in 10 Innings

HILO, Hawai'i – With two outs, bases juiced and the count full, Braeden Mondeau drew ball number four to bring across the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th as Hawai'i Hilo Baseball walked off Azusa Pacific, 2-1, Thursday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the James "Jimmy" Correa Ballfield at Francis Wong Stadium.

It was a rare single-game night of action instead of the typical doubleheader, but that just meant fitting all the drama of two contests into one.

Reigning PacWest Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week Logan Groff got the start and went 7.0 innings with six strikeouts, no walks, four hits allowed and just one run given up. After retiring the first two batters in order on strike three in the top of the second, APU managed to get back-to-back hits to plate the first run of the game.

In the bottom half, Cody Min took a first-pitch offering over the left field fence to tie the score.

The Cougars looked primed to jump ahead in the top of the 10th but had a runner thrown out at home plate before leaving all runners stranded with Xavier Pressley entering to toss an inning-ending strikeout.

Vance Oshiro and Noah Lane had back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the 10th. Mason Cook was intentionally walked to load the bases, but the next two batters went down swinging. Down to the last out of the inning, Mondeau battled to a full count and drew the walk-off walk for the win.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 2-7 in the PacWest (4-10 overall) as Azusa Pacific moved to a 7-6 conference record (9-10 overall).
