SURPRISE, Arizona – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Tennis fell to top seed Azusa Pacific in the quarterfinals of the Pacific West Conference Championships before finishing seventh overall this past weekend at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
Headliner for the tournament-opening matchup was on singles Court 1 with APU's No. 18 Elias Emilio Walter (PacWest Player of the Year) taking on Hawai'i Hilo's No. 42 Jaime Paquet (Newcomer of the Year). Paquet had previously bested him in three sets one month ago in Azusa, but Walter managed to get the win in two sets Thursday afternoon as the Vulcans fell, 4-0.
Hawai'i Hilo, seeded No. 8, took on fifth-seeded Fresno Pacific in consolation play, falling in a 4-2 effort. Paquet and Iori Furuhata (Court 6) picked up points for the Vulcans.
In the final match of the weekend and the season, the Vulcans took down seven-seed Bioa, 4-1, after grabbing singles by Paquet (Court 1), Agustin Gentile (Court 4), Yu Jhe Du (Court 5) and Coby Pearce (Court 6). It is the third season in a row Hawai'i Hilo has claimed a seventh place finish.
