Men’s Tennis Wins Opener, Drops Pair of Ranked Matches

TEXOMA – Hawaiʻi Hilo Men's Tennis opened its spring break trip at 1-2 in the South Central region, starting with a 4-0 victory over UT Dallas on Monday before falling to No. 37 Cameron, 1-4, on Tuesday and dropping a tight 3-4 decision to No. 20 Midwestern State on Wednesday.

The Vulcans took down the winless Comets in Richardson, Texas (UTD Tennis Courts), winning the doubles point in a tough tiebreaker battle on Court 2 (Sergi Tintore and Filippo Di Perna) then clinching singles play highlighted by Angel Fonseca's and David Krnavek's straight-sets victories on Courts 3 and 6, respectively, to seal the match.

Against Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma (Streich-Henry Tennis Complex), the 37th-ranked Aggies claimed the doubles point — coming down to a narrow matchup won by the fourth-ranked pair of Lukas Janousek (also ranked No. 4 in singles) and Noe Milliard (singles rank No. 73) on Court 1 — before winning three of four completed singles contests. Max Solano provided Hawai'i Hilo's lone point with a straight-sets victory on Court 2.

Wednesday's match against No. 20 Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas (MSU Tennis Center) came down to the wire. After the Mustangs took the doubles point, the Vulcans rallied in singles with Solano, Fonseca and Iori Furuhata each winning in three sets. The decisive moment came on Court 1 where Jaime Paquet battled No. 10 Germano Setti through an extended 11-9 tiebreak in a Set 3 defeat to give Midwestern State the 4-3 victory.
