COSTA MESA, California – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer played to a 2-2 tie with Vanguard on Monday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at the VU Soccer Field.
After a 19th-minute goal (Robert Ronco) by the Lions, Hawai'i Hilo evened the score in the waning moments of the opening half. Yoke Duku headed in a long-range feed from Kanilau Tolentino-Perry off a free kick opportunity near midfield with single digits counting down on the game clock.
In the 67th minute, the Vulcans took their lone corner kick attempt of the contest and nearly converted with a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Hawai'i Hilo stuck with it as Tolentino-Perry started a second-chance opportunity that was deflected out by the Vanguard goalkeeper only to find Teun van Gansewinkel to flush a shot through the left side of the goal for the score.
Vanguard managed to tie the score in the 74th minute on a header by Tyler Williams off a throw-in set piece.
Ten minutes later, the Lions had a golden opportunity with a penalty kick attempt after drawing a foul inside the Vulcans defensive box, but the shot attempt went high over the goal to keep the score knotted up through the final horn.
Tim Teicher made three saves in goal for Hawai'i Hilo.
