New brand of volleyball

It's a different brand of volleyball that the University of Hawaii at Hilo is playing as they rolled past St. Martin's College 25-18, 25-10, 25-23, in the second game of the Vulcan Classic in the UHH Gymnasium.

Match scores were 25-18, 25-10 and 25-23. The Vulcans are 1-0 while the Saints are 0-1.

Hillary Hurley led the Vulcans with 13 kills while newcomers Rachael Thornquist and Patty Vine combined for 17 kills on 37 attempts with only one error. Thornquist had eight kills and a .412 attack percentage while Vine had nine kills on 19 attempts with no errors (.474).

“We've got a ways to go but I think we played fairly well,” said UHH head coach Tino Reyes. “You always want to put your best player on the left side and it ended up our best hitter was Patty because she hit so smart.

“I'm hoping we learn from what she did. She doesn't hit the ball real hard but she hits smart, she hits off the block, she hits the line, she hits the angles, she hits with range. If the other girls do that, we're going to be much more successful because they have some velocity."

In the first match, Western New Mexico University outlasted Montana State University-Billings 25-12, 27-25, 23-25, 15-25, 15-10.

Angelina Pulu and Natali Murdock tallied 18 kills each to lead the Mustangs. Pulu also added 22digs.

Jennifer Boe led the Yellowjackets (0-1) with 14 kills and 15 digs.
