Back-to-back for Bersamin and Vulcans

Dayna Bersamin
Dayna Bersamin found a lot of Aloha in Aloha, Ore., as the University of Hawaii at Hilo sophomore defended her title by winning the 2011 Culturame Women's Golf Classic hosted by George Fox University at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in the Portland suburb of Aloha, Ore.

The Vulcans also defended the team title with a score of 601 and a 23-stroke victory. They were followed by George Fox (624), Lindfield College (680), Biola College (702), Willamette College (717), Northwest Christian College (719) and Pacific University (752).

“It's a very good win for confidence that we can shoot those numbers of 299 and 302,” said UHH Head Coach Jim DeMello. “Our team goal every time we play is 310. The course played short and it was wide open not like Bellingham and Saint Martin's where you would hit it behind trees.”

Bersamin turned in a one-under-par 72 in the final round to finish the tournament at even-par 146 and a four-stroke victory ahead of first round leader and teammate Kristen Sawada. Sawada turned in a 77 to go with her opening round 73 for a 150. Tied for third place was sophomore Nyssa Aoki at 151 (76-75)

Erika Morihiro finished at 156 (78-78) while Kacie Harada was at 159 (76-83).

“I was pleased with Erika's play,” said DeMello. “She hadn't come close to break 80 and she was pretty consistent.”
