Vulcans come back to earn split with Sharks

Next up is Chaminade in a 1 p.m. PacWest twinbill on Friday, April 29

KANEOHE, Hawaii – The University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Pacific University split today's PacWest twinbill on the HPU campus field with HPU claiming game one 14-5 and UH Hilo game two 9-5.

In claiming game two, the Vulcans improved to 28-17 overall and 17-9 in the PacWest while the Sharks are 14-30 overall, and 10-16 PacWest.

Victoria Garcia, Bailey Gaspar and Chenoa Au paced the Vulcans' 16-hit performance in game two with three hits each. Danielle Wilson (11-8) picked up the win while Cyanne Fernandez got her third save of the year. Wilson gave up three runs on five hits and two walks over four innings while Fernandez gave up two runs on five hits while striking out two over three innings.

Mari Kajiwara and Kayla Sanchez had three hits each for the Sharks. Alexa McCoin (0-7) took the loss giving up four runs on nine hits.

The Vulcans trailed 3-2 when they erupted for six runs in the fifth. Cristina Menjivar got the ball rolling with a 3-run homerun off of the center field flag pole. Gaspar followed with a solo shot just a few steps left of the poll. Garcia then capped the inning with a 2-run single.

Angela Aguinaga and Au paired hits for the Vulcans in game one while Sanchez and Nicole Viena had three hits each for the Sharks.

Billi Derleth (12-8) took the loss giving up 11 runs on 13 hits and a walk. HPU's Kristen Caskey (5-7) pitched a complete-game eight hitter.

The Vulcans took a 5-1 third-inning lead behind Aguinaga's bases-clearing double. After Au singled in a run, Brittany Huff doubled to end scoring.

But the third inning proved to be even bigger for the Sharks as they posted nine runs on six hits including back-to-back homeruns by Kayla Sanchez and Noelani Boyer.

The Vulcans take nearly two weeks off before a season-ending weekend when they face Chaminade University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 29 and HPU in a noon doubleheader the next day.
