COSTA MESA, California – Hawai'i Hilo Softball swept Saturday's doubleheader against Vanguard, winning 6-4 before a 1-0 nine-inning victory, to claim the four-game series, 3-1, in Pacific West Conference play at VU Softball Field.
Janessa Santos threw a nine-inning no-hit shutout in Game 2, striking out six batters to improve to 9-1. The reigning PacWest Conference Pitcher of the Week faced just 30 batters — three over the minimum for nine innings — surrendering two walks with the only other baserunner reaching on a defensive error credited to Santos on a slow high chopper over the middle.
Mariah Antoque delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the ninth to score Rayna White for the game's only run.
Mia Joaquin was the offensive standout in Game 1, going 4 for 4 with four RBI including a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning. Antoque batted 3 for 3 and scored three runs.
Hawai'i Hilo closed out a 16-game Southern California road trip with a 9-7 record and will now head to Japan for a pair of exhibition contests.
