IRVINE, California – Hawai'i Hilo Softball dropped the opener to No. 22 Concordia, 4-3, before rallying for a 6-5 victory in the nightcap to split Tuesday's doubleheader in Pacific West Conference play at Golden Eagles Stadium.
In the Game 2 victory, Mia Joaquin capped a five-run fifth-inning rally with a three-run homer (first of the season) to put the Vulcans ahead for good.
Janessa Santos went the distance once again in the pitching circle to improve to a 7-0 record, setting a career high with 11 strikeouts — the most in a single game by any pitcher in the PacWest Conference this season. Santos worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh by closing with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
The win marked Hawai'i Hilo head coach Aisha Sueda's 100th career victory. The former Vulcan (2009-2012) now holds a record of 100-95 (.512) and is in her fifth season as head coach.
