Golfers turn in balanced effort at SMU Invite

OLYMPIA, Wash.--Freshman Taylor Patrick shot a one-under par 70 to highlight a balanced University of Hawai`i Hilo effort on Day Two at the Saint Martin's University Invitational.

All five Vulcan golfers shot 75 or better, averaging four over par on the day. The Vulcans ended the two-day event tied for fifth out of 18 teams in the tournament held at the Olympia Golf and Country Club.

Chico State won the 36-hole tournament at +8, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay (+14), first-day leader British Columbia (+17), Concordia OR (+20) and Sonoma State/the Vulcans (+21).

Jerod Kinoshita, who sat in third place in the medalist race after shooting a 67 on Friday, fell back to a 74 on Saturday. He was still in contention until late in the round, when he carded back-to-back double bogeys on 16 and 17. He finished with a two-day score of 141 (+1), tied for fifth. UBC's Andrew Harrison shot a 67-71 to win the tournament at four under par.

Patrick, a newcomer from Surrey, British Columbia playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 77 on Friday for a two-round total of 147 (+5). UHH's No. 2 was Jeffrey Yamaguichi with two 73's (+4), while Braeden Campbell shot a 75 today and finished at +15. After a Friday to forget, Trevor Kua bounced back with an impressive 71 on Saturday to account for Hilo's second best score of the day.

"We were pretty pleased with our start," said UHH assistant coach Ron Takahashi after Saturday's play. "It was a solid opening to the season. We are anxious to get to Bellingham to play again."

The Vulcans will head up I-5 to play in the Western Washington Invitational next. They will play a practice round on Sunday, followed by 36 holes on Monday and a round of 18 on Monday.
